Statements in the House

Sport November 7th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the Paris 2024 games were extraordinary. Canadians cheered on our Olympic and Paralympic teams, as records were broken, medals were won and history was made.

The journey from playground to podium is long and hard, and our athletes train for years. Our Liberal government is proud to support over 1,900 athletes through the athlete assistance program and we are also proud to be increasing this program to provide more money for more athletes. An additional $7 million a year means a 23% increase in the living allowance and an additional 30% allowance for Paralympic athletes.

By investing in Canadian athletes, we are inspiring the next generation and building a stronger, united Canada.

Mr. Speaker, the committee of course is free to determine its own business, but I can assure the House that upon learning of the scandal, the government took immediate action and suspended the funding to Canada Soccer for the coaches who were implicated.

There has also been direct action taken by FIFA, by the Canadian Olympic Committee and by Canada Soccer itself, and I can assure the member we are watching the situation closely.

Mr. Speaker, Canadians from coast to coast proudly celebrated the exceptional performances of Team Canada this past summer. Canadians won a record number of medals, inspired the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic athletes, and made us deeply proud.

Our government supports athletes. We increased the amounts of the athlete assistance program, which supports over 1,800 athletes monthly in 94 disciplines. Our athletes dream big and work hard, and we have got the results to prove it.

Madam Speaker, we have heard very clearly about the need for systemic reform and culture change in sport. Survivors have bravely come forward so that we can learn, better protect our kids, and improve our systems and processes. What has been going on in sport, the maltreatment, the abuse and the discrimination, is unacceptable and has to stop. That is why we announced the creation of the future of sport commission, the membership of which we announced yesterday.

Along with the member for Lac-Saint-Louis, all of us here in the House, indeed all Canadians, need to build for our children a sport system that is safe and that they deserve.

Mr. Speaker, last week, our government announced an investment of $220 million to host the FIFA World Cup games in Vancouver and Toronto. This will generate an economic impact of $2 billion for our country. That is the return on that investment.

Sport December 14th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, in the past two years, athlete survivors have bravely come forward to share their stories so that we can learn, so that we can make our processes more safe for our kids, and so that we could get to the point we have. Thanks to them, on Monday, we announced the future of sport commission, a trauma-informed, victims rights and human rights based process. We are going to dig into safe sport and make the entire system better.

Sport December 12th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, yesterday we announced a commission on the future of sport in Canada that is trauma-informed and focuses on the victims. It is looking to determine the future of sport in our country.

My priority is athletes, victims, survivors and safe sport in Canada.

Mr. Speaker, I was recently in Chile to support Team Canada. There are 470 Canadian athletes participating in the Pan Am Games, with another 127 slated to compete at the Parapan Am Games in a couple of weeks. These include three athletes from my home riding of Delta. So far, Canada has won 105 medals and is on course to exceed its all-time medal count at these games.

I thank all the athletes, coaches, parents, trainers and everyone who makes it possible for the athletes to compete and succeed. On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to wish our athletes well and say, “Go, Canada, go.”
