Statements in the House

Employment December 7th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, we are definitely going to do that. We have an agreement with the Government of Quebec with regard to foreign workers.

We are making the processes more simple. The Government of Quebec is now able to bring in more workers more quickly. Some of the measures came into place yesterday and the rest will come in the weeks to come, but I can assure the member and everyone in the House that we are working very closely with the Government of Quebec on temporary foreign workers.

Small Business December 6th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, small businesses are absolutely a priority of our government. In fact, it is thanks to them that Canada gained 154,000 jobs last month. Our employment rate has gone down for the sixth consecutive month in a row, and in fact, we have gained 106% of the jobs lost during the pandemic.

We do have labour shortages, but we have a plan to address them. We have made the largest investment in training, we are investing in child care, we are investing in youth employment and we are investing in bringing talented workers to Canada. We will not rest until we address this.

Persons with Disabilities December 2nd, 2021

Mr. Speaker, I want to congratulate the member for Windsor—Tecumseh on his return to the House and for his unwavering support and advocacy for persons with disabilities.

No other government has done more for persons with disabilities, but we have much more work to do. In the spirit of “nothing without us”, we are building on the steps we have taken since 2015, including the historic Accessible Canada Act, our ongoing work to establish our first-ever disability inclusion action plan and the new Canada disability benefit.

I encourage all members to participate in discussions and learn more about the important contributions of persons with disabilities in all our communities, and not just on December 3 but every day.

Employment December 2nd, 2021

Mr. Speaker, because of the strength of our economy, some sectors are outpacing their ability to find workers. That is why we have made the largest investment in training for workers in Canadian history.

Moving forward, we absolutely have a plan to address these labour shortages by welcoming talented workers to Canada: $10-a-day child care that will allow parents to return to work; support for training and youth programs; keeping experienced workers in the workforce; boosting the participation of diverse Canadians; and addressing the specific needs of evolving sectors. We are on it.

Labour November 25th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, we understand that some sectors are unable to find workers.

We have a plan to address the labour shortage by welcoming talented workers to Canada, keeping experienced workers in the workforce, boosting Canadians' participation in the skilled trades and addressing the specific needs of evolving sectors.

Labour November 25th, 2021

Mr. Speaker, some sectors in Canada are actually outpacing their ability to find workers, and that is because of the strength of our economy. That is why, through budget 2021, we made the largest investment in training for workers in Canadian history to help them reskill to meet the needs of employers.

Moving forward, we have a plan to address these labour shortages by welcoming talented workers to Canada, keeping experienced workers in the workforce, boosting the participation of diverse Canadians in the skilled trades and addressing the specific needs of evolving sectors.

Persons with Disabilities June 22nd, 2021

Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for Alfred-Pellan for his work on behalf of persons with disabilities.

Since 2015, our government has taken historic measures to create an inclusive Canada for persons with disabilities. Our 2020-21 budget focuses on measures that embody the “nothing without us” principle. We are investing in accessible communities, training and job creation, students with disabilities, and inclusive child care services.

This morning, we introduced a bill to establish the Canada disability benefit. This important bill will help reduce poverty and provide financial security for Canadians with disabilities.

With an inclusive approach, everyone wins.

Employment Insurance June 22nd, 2021

Mr. Speaker, for workers undergoing major treatment or needing more time to recover from an illness or injury, that gap from when their benefits run out to when they are well enough to return to work is a financially stressful time.

That is why, in budget 2021, we are extending EI sickness benefits from 15 to 26 weeks. This extension will provide nearly 169,000 Canadians every year with additional time and flexibility.

Employment Insurance June 22nd, 2021

Mr. Speaker, Canadians expect and deserve to have an employment insurance plan that is flexible and meets their needs. Employment insurance sickness benefits are an important support for Canadians who have to stay home from work because of an illness or injury.

Workers who receive major treatments or who need more time to heal will benefit from the measure in budget 2021 to extend EI benefits from 15 to 26 weeks. This extension will provide nearly 169,000 Canadians every year with additional time and flexibility.
