Statements in the House

Privilege December 16th, 2024

Madam Speaker, some of us reach an age where we express our age in Celsius. It works for us.

I appreciate the latitude the member took with his comments. We have heard an awful lot from the opposition about the carbon tax and the horrible burden it is placing on the cost of everything, and yet every reasonable economist in the land says that it is simply not the case.

Perhaps the member could explain where the NDP is on that specific issue.

Committees of the House December 16th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the 9th interim report of the Special Committee on the Canada–People’s Republic of China Relationship, entitled “Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy: Two Years Later”.

Our diplomatic, economic and military presence is valued in the region and we are making investments in long-term relationships that will be very beneficial for Canada and that region in years to come. Pursuant to Standing Order 109, the committee requests that the government table a comprehensive response to this report.

Committees of the House December 12th, 2024

Madam Speaker, if the whip is listening, I intend to vote for this, so they can just put that on the record right now.

However, the whole gold digger clause represents an attitude toward women that was just back in the dinosaur age. We now have very capable women serving in the armed forces who may remarry some gold digger guy in the future. Could the hon. member reflect on the fact that maybe the tables are turning and that this is all about equity?

Taxation December 10th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the government did make that great announcement to support Canadians over the holiday season. Holidays should be a stress-free period for all Canadians, but for some, this is not the case, as spending can be a source of difficulty for some families. We have a plan for that, but that would be the plan that the Conservatives voted against.

Could the minister share more details about our government's plan to put more money in the pockets of Canadians?

Taxation December 10th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the government made a great announcement to support Canadians over this holiday season, because the holidays should be a stress-free period for Canadians—

Taxation November 29th, 2024

Madam Speaker, there is good news for Canadians. Our government has declared a GST holiday on groceries, snacks, and clothing and gifts for kids. They are all exempt from the GST starting December 14, which is an immediate lift for all Canadians as they celebrate the gift of Christmas.

Could the government share why this deserves support from all members of the House, especially Conservatives, who all ran on the idea in 2021 but turned Grinch last night and whose hearts are still three sizes too small?

Government Business No. 43—Proceedings on Bill C-78 November 28th, 2024

Madam Speaker, I have a little time for him. The member just admitted something.

The Conservative plan back in 2021 would have taken the tax off everything. I would appreciate the member's reaction to this scenario. Somebody goes out and they buy a present for their little one for $25, and taking the tax off saves them $1.25. Somebody goes out and treats themselves to a $25,000 watch, and they are saving $1,250.

It seems that once again the Conservatives are tilting the playing field toward those who can spend the most. Can he comment on that?

Government Business No. 43—Proceedings on Bill C‑78 November 28th, 2024

Madam Speaker, I cannot blame the Conservatives for having a little amnesia about the GST cut they proposed in 2021, because it was on everything, so somebody who treated themselves to a $25,000 watch would have saved about $1,250. That is a little different from the tax cut being proposed here, and I am wondering if the member for Vaughan—Woodbridge can pinpoint what the big difference is in what we are proposing.

Government Business No. 43—Proceedings on Bill C‑78 November 28th, 2024

Madam Speaker, the Conservatives ran on putting a price on pollution, but they forgot about that. They then ran on an idea of cutting the GST for Christmas, but they forgot about that too.

It really concerns me when the Leader of the Opposition says he will not allow any attack on a woman's right to choose. What are the chances Conservatives forget about that when they get the chance?

Privilege November 28th, 2024

On a point of order, Madam Speaker, it is useful now and then for the Conservatives to be accurate. It was not a coalition. The member is misleading the House.
