Statements in the House

Committees of the House December 5th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the hon. member gave a very good speech on this topic. She mentioned what Canada is doing and that we should try to do more around the world.

Has she got any ideas on how Canada should be helping other countries in the world catch up to where we are, when it comes to abortion and women's rights?

Committees of the House December 5th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the 18th Report of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans, entitled “Supplementary Estimates (B), 2024-25”. The committee has considered the votes referred and reports the same.

Privilege November 26th, 2024

Madam Speaker, thank you for the opportunity to try to correct the history that the member spoke about. I know he said that history would repeat itself, or whatever, but I want to talk about when Stephen Harper was prime minister.

The first statement Stephen Harper made about Atlantic Canadians was that they had a defeatist attitude. They wanted to survive on EI and not get out and find jobs. We can talk about protecting people, but Stephen Harper shut down the search and rescue facility of Coast Guard in St. John's. It was opened again by the current government when we came to power.

Of course the Conservatives did not care about Newfoundland. Premier Williams, at the time, felt so dismayed by the Stephen Harper government that he flew the Canadian flag upside down at the Confederation building. It is disgusting.

Can the member comment on these things from a previous government?

Privilege November 18th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I listened, in good part, to the member's speech and he was quick to throw darts at the Liberal Party, who were the government of the day; he was quick to throw darts at the former Conservative government, but he did not throw any darts at the NDP and we would not know but that it was squeaky clean. The New Democrats had the scandal of office rentals, which went to court and they all were ordered to pay back the money. Have the member and all the NDP members paid back the funds from that scandal?

Privilege October 29th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the member said one thing that I was interested in. I do not know how he arrived at it, but it was that “winter is ahead” of the Prime Minister in the polls. If he could explain that to me, I would appreciate it.

Committees of the House October 3rd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the 16th report of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans, entitled “Reducing the Harms Caused to Canadian Fish Stocks by Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing”.

2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games September 24th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the outstanding young athletes in Avalon who took part in the 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games this past August, hosted by the town of Bay Roberts. Thousands of young athletes aged 13 to 15 from across the province showed exemplary sportsmanship, athleticism, teamwork and skill. It was an honour to witness such a remarkable celebration of sport and community.

A special thanks goes out to Walter Yetman, mayor of the town of Bay Roberts; the members of the organizing committee; and especially Judy Morrow and Neil Kearley, the co-chairs of the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, who have been a part of this initiative since 2018. A sincere thanks also goes out to each coach, parent, family member, volunteer, spectator, driver and sponsor for their support. It would not have happened without them.

Today, these young people are our athletes. Tomorrow, they will be our leaders. I invite all members to join me in applauding everyone involved with the 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games.

Committees of the House September 19th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I want to give the member for Winnipeg North a chance to once again highlight what this government has done for housing in comparison to the previous government.

Electoral Participation Act June 18th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. I hate to interrupt my colleague in his speech, but there is a loud noise outside the chamber. I can hardly hear the person two seats away speaking.

Electoral Participation Act June 18th, 2024

Madam Speaker, before I get to my question, the member mentioned an employee who received his master's today. An employee of mine in my Hill office received two master's degrees. I do not like to be outdone by a Conservative, so I will note that. As well as having a dual master's in political science, he has been accepted into the Ph.D. program. Again, I want to congratulate my employee, Liam O'Brien.

When the member talks about moving to the election, has he spoken to the 32-plus members on his side who would not qualify for a pension when they do not get re-elected?
