Mr. Speaker, it is interesting, the Conservatives were not attacking this individual before he offered to help and give ideas on a voluntary basis. As soon as he identified he wants to support the country by offering economic advice, they want to attack him, because anybody who has ideas who does not support them becomes a villain, becomes somebody to attack. That is the kind of country they want to create, where either a person is a friend or is an enemy. Either they agree with Conservatives or they attack Conservatives. Mark Carney has made incredible contributions to this country and to this world. They should be ashamed of the way they are behaving.

Mr. Speaker, here it is again. If someone is not a Conservative, they are on a hit list. They are going to be identified, attacked and vilified. It does not matter what their contributions were to their country or the world, their character will be maligned and attacked. That is exactly what this is: an ad hominem, baseless attack to try to intimidate and scare people from providing commentary and ideas to this government. That is what Mark Carney is doing. He is providing his thoughts and ideas on a voluntary basis to this government. What Conservatives are trying to do is intimidate anybody from giving good advice.

Mr. Speaker, what we see is that as soon as somebody does not support what the Conservatives do, they are slandered and attacked.

Incendiary language has been used about an individual in this instance who has served his country in so many different capacities, both as a governor of the Bank of Canada and as a governor of the Bank of England. He is recognized internationally as making incredible contributions to the world and its thinking about finance, and what we get from the party opposite is ad hominem attacks and personal insults, all because they do not share his opinion. That is concerning.

Mr. Speaker, regarding what they would axe in a place like Newfoundland, let us remember that the Conservative leader said the dental care program did not exist. He said it is not going to work and not going to happen. Newfoundland now happens to be one of the leading places in the country for people getting care, and on average, the program is saving them $730.

Do they know what is going to save our emergency rooms and create space? It is $1.8 billion for the opportunity to serve emergency rooms. Imagine those savings. That is what they are going to cut. When they look vulnerable people in the eye, they should tell them the truth and tell them what they are going to do. They are going to take away their dental care. They are going to make sure people do not get the diabetes medication they need and that is going to cost some big money.

Mr. Speaker, what is irresponsible is to implement measures without first ensuring that the system is ready. As far as I am concerned, this step is absolutely essential.

That is why we are engaged in a nationwide conversation. It will not take long, only a few months. Never before in Canada's history have there been advance requests. It only stands to reason that we should take a few months to make sure that the system is ready, to hold a conversation and to allow everyone in every family across Canada to participate.

Mr. Speaker, it is not a question of courage, not at all. It is a question of logic and compassion. We need to take the time to ensure that the system is ready for such a significant change. It is about making sure that, when it comes to something as sensitive as this issue, every family across the country has the time to have a conversation. That is why we are now having a national conversation. It will not last long, only until next March. This is a good opportunity to talk and make sure our system is ready.

Mr. Speaker, I lost my grandmother to Alzheimer's. It is a sensitive topic that calls for a national conversation across the country and a conversation with my provincial and territorial counterparts.

I wonder if the member across the way can co-operate with me so we can take the time to have a national conversation and ensure that the system is ready and that there is a conversation in every family across the country. I think that is so important.

I lost my grandmother to Alzheimer's. It was a very difficult time for my family. I am familiar with the subject and I know that it is an extremely delicate matter. A national conversation is absolutely vital.

I need time to talk with my provincial and territorial counterparts and make sure that the system is ready.

Mr. Speaker, we always work with others. On an issue as sensitive as advance requests, it is absolutely crucial that we engage in a national conversation and make sure our system is ready.

We need to take our time on this matter because it is absolutely essential to make sure that the government is doing the right thing.

Mr. Speaker, what else is back? We see tuberculosis, measles and syphilis. Why does this happen? It is because the slogan machines on the other side, diving deep into the threads on Reddit, are creating and spreading information that confuses the health landscape. It means that things we had long put behind us come back.

We cannot afford the kind of misinformation and nonsense they spin, not only because it is not true, but because it puts lives at risk.
