Government Business No. 43—Proceedings on Bill C‑78 November 28th, 2024

Madam Speaker, it is a pleasure to rise today. I will be sharing my time with my great colleague from Kelowna—Lake Country.

The Liberals are so desperate, so worried about getting wiped off the electoral map, that they actually think they can buy Canadians' votes for $250, using Canadians' own money. It is all borrowed, too. Liberals have already spent all the tax dollars they have collected; therefore they are actually borrowing money from the banks to give cheques to Canadians, so Canadians will be stuck with the bill.

This reminded me of someone's taking their credit card to the bank machine, taking out $250 and thinking they are actually ahead by $250. That is exactly what the government is doing, all for the crass purpose of trying to buy Canadians' votes.

Government Business No. 43—Proceedings on Bill C‑78 November 28th, 2024

Madam Speaker, I have a serious question about the bill, and I hope to get a serious answer.

Just today, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business released a statement after surveying their members. They said that a majority of small firms oppose the GST holiday that the member's government is proposing. Only 4% of small businesses believe it will improve sales; furthermore, “75% say it will be costly and complicated to implement the holiday [and] 65% say there is not enough time to implement the change”. The bill is putting pressure on small businesses to comply with onerous, back of the napkin changes when they should be concentrating on making a living.

Why will the government not stand with small business?

Bruce Oake Recovery Centre November 28th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the important work of the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre in my riding. The centre is a non-profit residential treatment facility located in Winnipeg, founded by Scott and Anne Oake. It provides addiction treatment and recovery services to individuals struggling with substance abuse disorders, and with a 57% success rate, the centre works.

I recently spoke with Shane Sturby-Highfield. Shane struggled with addiction since his youth, but thanks to the centre and to his own determination, he will be three years sober in December. He has his son back, and he has a good job working for Manitoba Hydro.

Success breeds success, so Scott Oake has now broken ground on a second centre in Winnipeg, the Anne Oake Recovery Centre, named for his late wife.

Treatment saves lives. Conservatives will not give up on those who are struggling with addictions. Common-sense Conservatives will stop taxpayer-funded drugs and will put that money into treatment and recovery to bring our loved ones home drug-free.

Anti-Semitism November 27th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, on a point of order, I would like to seek unanimous consent for the following motion: I move that the House recognize that the Liberal government waited nearly a week to condemn the violent anti-Semitic riots in Montreal and recognize that the member for Mount Royal says one thing—

Public Safety November 25th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister dances while Montreal burns. Over the weekend, Montreal was attacked by a vicious anti-Semitic mob. It attacked police, lit vehicles on fire and bashed in windows while the Prime Minister was busy dancing at a Taylor Swift concert.

This is what we get from a Prime Minister who, for nine years, has divided Canadians. He divided us by race, religion, region, age and wealth. He has opened our borders to criminals and terrorists who attack law-abiding Canadian citizens. What is the result? It is firebombings of synagogues, extremists attacking mandirs and gurdwaras, over 100 churches burned and vandalized, and hate crime up 251%. When it comes to fighting anti-Semitism, Second Cup has more chutzpah than this weak Prime Minister.

Canadians need an election now so that Conservatives can restore our values, our freedoms, and law and order in this country.

Privilege November 20th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I was listening carefully to my colleague from the NDP's speech. He said a few things: that the housing crisis is the Liberals' fault, at least since 2015; that the SDTC spending by the Liberal government is horrible and inexcusable; and that the NDP is horrified by the wasteful spending and scandalous corruption.

The member and his colleagues have voted time and again to keep the corrupt Liberal government in power. My question is really this: Will he, at least for himself, commit to standing by his words and at the very next opportunity vote non-confidence in the government so that at least he will stand up on his principles and try to bring down the government so we can have an election?

Anti-Semitism November 18th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the anti-Semitic violence threatening the lives of Jewish Canadians has now come to Parliament Hill. A homemade bomb had been built by ISIS terrorists, and the RCMP foiled a plot to detonate it during last December's rally for Israel. After nine years under the Prime Minister, hate crimes have increased by 251%, with 66% being directed towards Jews. Synagogues and Jewish schools are being firebombed.

Canada's Jewish community has implored the government to act against this rising tide of hate. The Conservative members of the public safety committee have asked for an emergency meeting to root out this evil. Every Jew has the right to live in safety and freedom from harm; shamefully, however, Liberal members are blocking the meeting. Frankly, it is disgusting.

Will the Liberal members of the public safety committee do their job and keep Canada's Jews safe before a bomb actually goes off?

Privilege October 28th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank my colleague from Edmonton Manning for his excellent speech. I have been listening to this debate for a long time now. The reality is that the Auditor General found that money had been funnelled from Liberal appointees at the green slush fund to themselves. All we are asking for is that the evidence of this crime be released by the government. I would think that would be a natural thing, that the government would want to co-operate with the police and get to the bottom of this crime.

What does the hon. member think is in these documents that would be so damning against the government that it would allow Parliament to be paralyzed for weeks on end?

Anti-Semitism October 24th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, after nine years, the NDP-Liberal government has allowed anti-Jewish hate crimes to increase by 400%. Members of the Jewish community make up just 1% of Canada's population, but are the targets of 70% of all religiously motivated hate crimes in Canada.

Synagogues have been firebombed, Jewish schools have been shot at, Jewish-owned businesses have been vandalized and Jewish-founded hospitals have been barricaded. Calls for death to Jews are coming from radical Hamas-loving, Jew-hating, terrorist sympathizers on the streets in front of Jewish seniors' homes. Jewish Canadians did not ask to be targeted with acts of hate and violence, and this escalation of hate and fear is just not the Canadian way. Enough is enough.

When will the Prime Minister finally stand up for Jewish Canadians and take this disgusting rise in anti-Semitism seriously so that every Jew, no matter where they live, work and go to school, can live safe and free from hate?

Privilege October 22nd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, there is a lot there, and I have a great deal of respect for the member. I do think it is just common sense for the government to turn over the unredacted documents to the RCMP. The commissioner has said he is receiving documents already, so the argument that it cannot be done for some reason just is not true. The government should just get it done so we can get to the bottom of this mess.
