Statements in the House

Carbon Pricing February 15th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I choose to use the 12 seconds, because Albertans need to know that falsehoods from the Conservatives do not pay the bills. The Canada carbon rebate helps. That is why we put it in place.

Carbon Pricing February 15th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, we will do the right thing. We will continue to fight climate change and make sure that Albertans have more money in their pockets than they are paying in the carbon pricing, with $1,800 to a family of four and, if one gets the 20% rural top-up, $2,160.

Let us dial that back. It will be $450 every three months into the—

Employment Insurance February 15th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I appreciate my colleague's advocacy on this important issue. We have spoken about the ongoing work of modernizing our EI system, and the government continues to make progress on this. As my colleague is aware, this particular issue is before the courts, but make no mistake: We are supporting families, parents and women. Let us look at the child benefit, at $10-a-day child care and at all of the improvements we have made to the EI system, making sure that parents have more access to the system.

We are going to deliver for families and for women. That is what we are here to do and it is exactly what we are going to do.

Diversity and Inclusion February 12th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, in the weeks since Danielle Smith took to social media to threaten the privacy, the safety and the dignity of queer and trans students, I have spoken to countless individuals who have told me how terrified they are about the discriminatory actions taken by the provincial government.

I have one message for every person in Alberta who believes in the inclusive and equitable province that we know it to be. What those people need to do is to call the silent Conservative MPs in this room and call the MLAs in Alberta, so we can kill this bill before it gets to the floor of the legislature.

Official Languages February 8th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I respect my hon. colleague.

We promote bilingualism. We respect the tribunal. We respect the committee. A 2,000-page bilingual report that Canadians can read is coming.

Official Languages February 8th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I am a very proud Franco-Albertan. We know we have standards when it comes to promoting bilingualism. This applies to the courts and everywhere else in our system.

We are also committed to protecting French in Quebec and across the country—not with one, two or three, but with $4.1 billion. We are here for bilingualism and for Canada's francophonie.

Official Languages February 6th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, it is obvious that, on this Tuesday in the House of Commons, the Bloc Québécois is trying to pick a fight over language.

I want everyone to know that I am a redeemed francophone. When I first landed at Campus Saint-Jean in Alberta in 1998, I could not speak French, but I learned French and now I am the Minister of Official Languages. I am proof that bilingualism is working in Canada.

Official Languages February 6th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank my colleague for the question. I acknowledge the frustration of francophones in the country on this.

As my colleague knows full well, the commission produced a final report of 2,000 pages in both official languages. The challenge of this situation should also be noted, specifically that the commission received 200,000 documents.

That does not mean this situation is acceptable. There is a lesson to be learned here and we will do better in future.

Health February 5th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, a warm fuzzy video hiding daggers at my community in Alberta came out last week on social media.

I spent hours on the phone consoling people who were crying on the phone and who were asking how we can stand up for the rights of 2SLGBTQ people in Alberta. We are going to continue to work on this, and I have one message for Albertans and people across the country.

Legal challenges notwithstanding, the one way we can stop this is to kill the bill before it gets to the legislature. Write to one's UCP members. Get fired up. Mobilize, because kids' rights matter.

Carbon Pricing February 5th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the member is the one standing with the bullies. He is the one picking on vulnerable people. He is standing with Danielle Smith instead of defending the most vulnerable youth in our country. He has shown Canadians who he is, and Canadians will not forget.
