Statements in the House

Public Safety May 14th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, not only is the RCMP fully complying with the law, but it is also respecting the will of Parliament.

Our government will not apologize for having ended the ineffective, wasteful long gun registry.

Our government has taken a clear position. This Parliament has decided that we would move forward, and we expect that all agencies will move forward. That is why we needed to close a loophole.

We are doing it and we are proud to make sure that the will of Parliament and this country is respected.

Mr. Speaker, the member can look at the budget on the website, and I quote: “Securing Government systems”, “Partnering to secure vital cyber systems outside the federal government”, “Helping Canadians to be secure online”. That is in the budget.

The member can stand up and support the budget. Why? It is because we are investing to make sure that industry, Canadians, and the government are protected against cyberattacks.

We have a strategy. Why is the member of the NDP not supporting these measures?

Public Safety May 14th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for her question.

I can confirm that, on pages 326 and 327, the budget allocates additional resources to address the cybercrime challenges facing the government and businesses. One good way to help businesses coping with cybersecurity challenges is to support the Conservative government's budget. That is in addition to the strategy we have implemented.

While the Liberals have done nothing, we have implemented a strategy and provided additional resources. We certainly did not get any support from the New Democrats or the Liberals. Nevertheless, we will continue to take the necessary steps to address this new threat to businesses, individuals and the government.

Aboriginal Affairs May 13th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I have to say that I agree with my colleague.

Like her, I can confirm that the RCMP apologized and that that was the right thing to do.

Public Safety May 13th, 2015

Absolutely not, Mr. Speaker.

Operational decisions are made by the RCMP, in which I have complete confidence.

Our government, like the committee that my colleague belongs to, believes that there must be transparency and respect for the investigation process. That is what we are doing, and that is why we have to call a spade a spade. What happened here on October 22 was a terrorist attack.

When will the New Democrats face reality and come up with solutions like our anti-terrorism measures?

Public Safety May 13th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I have full confidence in the judgment of the RCMP. While respecting the operational independence of the RCMP, our government shares the view of the public safety committee, on which the member sits, and approves of the principle of transparency. On this side of the House, we are not afraid to call a spade a spade. What took place here on October 22 was a terrorist attack. When will the NDP come clear on that?

Canadian Security Intelligence Service May 6th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 32(2), I would like to table, in both official languages, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service 2013-14 public report.

Public Safety May 6th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I will, but let me thank the great member for Kildonan—St. Paul for her outstanding commitment against human trafficking and child exploitation.

I would like to inform the House that more than three dozen people have been arrested in connection with a child pornography ring operating in 17 countries, one of whom is an individual who may have had more 2,000 victims.

We will continue to target these people who are going after our treasured young people, and we will continue to protect our children. We will put these criminals behind bars. We will put legislation in place, such as our sexual predator registry.

Public Safety May 6th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, it is the last time for the NDP to join the Muslims Facing Tomorrow, the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, to join the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, because they say we need strong tools that also protect the rights of Canadians.

We need to make sure that the jihadi international terrorists who are threatening us are prevented from acting by filling the gap of our information sharing. We will stand up for Canadians. Let us vote tonight to have a safer country.

Public Safety May 6th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I invite the NDP members to be guided by the Supreme Court, which has said that the Security Intelligence Review Committee is a model that strikes a balance between the protection of information and the procedural rights of individuals.

When will the New Democrats join us in taking measured, effective action? Will the NDP support our budget, which doubles resources?

What I really want to say is, “Wake up, NDP!”
