Statements in the House

Housing November 6th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, last year, we signed an historic agreement with Quebec to make a joint investment of $1.8 billion in affordable housing under the housing accelerator fund. Last week, the Conservative leader announced that he would eliminate that fund and tear up our agreement with Quebec, putting all of the projects in jeopardy.

The Prime Minister—

Robert Plante June 19th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, today I would like to pay tribute to one of Laval's great community builders, Robert Plante, president of R. & R. Plante. Robert also served as a municipal councillor for the L'Orée-des-Bois sector of Fabreville in Laval for 25 years.

The family business was founded in 1957 by Robert Plante and his wife Rita Robitaille. The couple built thousands of single-family homes and rental buildings in Laval. Their company received the APCHQ Diamond Award, given to companies with over 25 years of customer service excellence.

Now, the time has come for Mr. Plante to hand over the business to the next generation after more than 68 years of loyal service, and after Ms. Robitaille sadly passed away on April 15 at the age of 90. The family will continue the company's tradition of excellence in honour of their dedicated parents.

The Economy May 29th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, this government knows that climate action is not just necessary for the future of the planet; it is also how Canada remains competitive. Last year, $2.4 trillion was invested in creating our net-zero economy.

Can the Prime Minister highlight some of the measures the government is taking to attract clean investment to Canada?

Tragedy at Laval Day Care February 9th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, a horrifying and unprecedented tragedy occurred in my riding. A Société de transport de Laval bus crashed into the Garderie éducative Ste-Rose on Terrasse Dufferin in Laval, killing two young children and seriously injuring six.

This is so, so sad, and the children, their families and the day care workers are in my thoughts. I am deeply distressed. I want to thank the first responders, including the firefighters, police officers and paramedics, as well as the people who were on the scene.

I thank my many colleagues of all parties for their sympathy and condolences following this devastating tragedy. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families affected.

Labour November 1st, 2022

Mr. Speaker, the Government of Canada is committed to collective agreements that are reasonable for taxpayers and that provide employees with fair wage adjustments and provisions that reflect today's workplace.

Sarkis Berejikian October 17th, 2022

Mr. Speaker, today, I want to pay tribute to a man who works in a dying trade: shoe repair.

Sarkis Berejikian owns the Cordonnerie Jean‑Pierre II in old Sainte‑Rose, Laval. He is a typical 1970s shoemaker. Mr. Berejikian was born in Syria in 1946. He later moved with his parents to Lebanon, his adopted country, where he trained as a shoemaker. He arrived in Canada in February 1988 and opened his shoe repair shop in 1991.

Mr. Berejikian is a kind and professional shoemaker who does great work for a reasonable price. At age 76, he is still just as passionate about his job. As we often say, we need to encourage our local business owners.

Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day May 18th, 2022

Mr. Speaker, for Mullivaikkal, Tamils across the world mourn their loved ones. May 18, 2009, marks the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka. With no peace on the island until this date, over 70,000 Tamils were killed, 300,000 were detained and countless disappeared.

Today marks the 13th anniversary of the Mullivaikkal genocide. We join with the Tamil people in honouring them and remembering.

Canada Revenue Agency March 31st, 2022

Mr. Speaker, as we all know, tax season is now half over. Millions of Canadians have already completed and filed their tax returns, and many others are about to join them by filing their returns in the next few days.

Can the Minister of Revenue tell us how this year's tax season is going?
